Single Hung Windows
Single hung windows are a vertical sliding window with two sashes in a single frame. The top sash is fixed in place; only the bottom sash operates, sliding upward to open. Hidden spring-loaded balances inside the active sash provide smooth operation without visible cords or weights. Single hung windows are an excellent choice for tall openings or any situation where top-sash operation is not needed — you get the classic look of a double hung at a simpler, more economical construction.
How Single Hung Windows Work
The lower sash lifts up to open, while the upper sash remains stationary. This makes single hung windows simpler in mechanism than double hungs, with fewer moving parts. The fixed top sash also means a tighter weather seal at the top of the frame, which can improve energy performance in some installations.
Wood Species & Construction
We build single hung windows from solid lumber in your specified species — Douglas fir, clear pine, mahogany, white oak, and others. Mortise and tenon joinery throughout. Frames are built to your exact rough opening dimensions.
Glass & Energy Efficiency
Insulated glass units (IGUs) with Low-E coatings for Title 24 compliance, or single-pane glass for historic restorations. True divided lite (TDL) or simulated divided lite (SDL) configurations available.
Matching Existing Windows
For additions and remodels, we can replicate your existing single hung profiles, muntin patterns, and exterior casing so new windows match the originals — even if the original manufacturer is no longer in business.
Hardware Options
Sash lifts and locks in a range of finishes. We can match existing hardware or supply period-correct hardware for restoration projects.
