A Single Hung is an application of a vertical sliding window. There are two sash in a frame. The top sash is fixed and the bottom sash slides over the top sash when lifted. There are spring loaded balances that are installed in the active sash, that are hidden. When the window is tall or when operation of the top sash is not anticipated then this application serves its purpose.
