Single Casement & Awning Windows

A single casement is one operating sash in a frame, hinged on one side to swing open like a door. When the same sash is hinged at the top and swings outward from the bottom, it’s called an awning window. Both styles provide excellent ventilation and a clean, unobstructed view when closed. Single casements are the most common window style we build — versatile, weathertight, and adaptable to any home style from modern to historic.

Operating Options

• Crank-out — a rotary handle opens the sash outward; the mechanism is concealed in the frame when closed
• Push-out — butt hinges with a manual pull handle; no crank mechanism, just push the sash open
• In-swing — hinges on the interior so the sash swings inward; ideal where exterior clearance is limited
• Awning — hinged at the top, swings outward from the bottom; can be left open during rain

Locking Mechanism & Hardware

Crank-out casements can be locked in many different ways, including multipoint locking systems that secure the sash at multiple points along the frame. Push-out and in-swing configurations provide different options for hardware — from simple lever locks to surface-mounted bolts and shoot bolts — depending on the swing direction and sash size. Each operating type also offers different screen options: crank-out windows typically use exterior roll-out screens, while push-out and in-swing windows can accept interior or exterior screens depending on the swing direction.

Wood Species & Construction

Built from solid lumber in your specified species — Douglas fir, clear pine, mahogany, white oak, and others. Mortise and tenon joinery throughout. The sash is sized to your opening.

Glass & Divided Lites

Insulated glass with Low-E for Title 24, or single-pane for historic work. True divided lite (TDL) or simulated divided lite (SDL) in any muntin pattern.

Matching Existing Windows

For additions and restorations, we can replicate existing casement profiles, hinge configuration, and muntin patterns — even if the original manufacturer is no longer in business.
