Custom Solid Wood Panel Doors

A custom panel door is built with solid wood panels set within a framework of stiles and rails. Unlike a French door or other glazed door design, a panel door uses no glass and can be made as an interior or exterior door to suit the opening, architectural style, and finish schedule.

Panel doors can be designed with a traditional, transitional, or contemporary appearance. The layout may include one panel, two panels, three panels, four panels, or a custom arrangement based on your drawings, photographs, or existing door.

The proportions of the rails, stiles, and panels make a major difference in how a door fits the building. We can build a straightforward replacement panel door or develop a custom layout to complement the surrounding millwork and architecture.

Matching Existing Panel Doors

We reproduce existing panel doors for remodels, additions, repairs, and historic properties. A new door can be made to match the panel layout, sticking profile, rail and stile proportions, arch detail, wood species, and overall appearance of an existing door.

Photographs are helpful, but an in-person sample or detailed measurements may be needed when matching a distinctive profile or older construction. This work is especially useful when a replacement door needs to blend with original doors rather than look like a new off-the-shelf product.

Solid Wood Construction

Our panel doors are manufactured from solid lumber with traditional stile-and-rail construction. The stiles and rails form the structural frame of the door, while the panels are fitted to allow for normal seasonal wood movement.

Wood species are selected according to the project, finish, application, and budget. Common choices include clear pine, Douglas fir, poplar, red oak, white oak, mahogany, and redwood. Doors may be supplied ready for paint or prepared for a stained finish, depending on the material selected.

For exterior openings, we can manufacture a pre-hung unit so the door and frame are prepared together before shipment. Hardware preparation, thresholds, and weather protection are specified according to the requirements of the individual project.

Interior and Exterior Applications

Custom panel doors are often used for front entries, side entries, bedrooms, closets, offices, utility rooms, and historically styled homes. An exterior panel door provides a traditional solid appearance where privacy, durability, and a glass-free design are preferred. Interior panel doors can be made to coordinate with casing, base moulding, crown moulding, and other woodwork throughout the property.
