Double Hung Windows
Double hung windows are a classic vertical sliding window design with two operating sashes in a single frame. Both the upper and lower sash slide vertically, allowing you to open the window from the top, the bottom, or both for versatile ventilation. Hidden spring-loaded balances inside the sash provide smooth, effortless operation without visible cords or weights.
How Double Hung Windows Work
Each sash operates independently. The lower sash lifts up; the upper sash slides down. When both are partially open, warm air exits through the top opening while cooler air enters through the bottom — a natural convection that makes double hung windows especially effective for airflow. The sash tilt inward for easy cleaning from inside the home.
Wood Species & Construction
We build double hung windows from solid lumber in your specified species — Douglas fir, clear pine, mahogany, white oak, and others. Sash are constructed with mortise and tenon joinery for structural integrity. Frames are built to your rough opening dimensions.
Glass & Energy Efficiency
Available with insulated glass units (IGUs) with Low-E coatings for Title 24 compliance, or single-pane glass for historic restorations where original glazing must be matched. Choose true divided lite (TDL) with individual panes or simulated divided lite (SDL) with grilles between the glass.
Matching Existing Double Hung Windows
For additions, remodels, and historic renovations, we can replicate your existing double hung window profiles, muntin patterns, and exterior casing. If the original manufacturer is no longer in business, we can match the design from a sample.
Hardware Options
Sash lifts, locks, and tilt latches are available in a range of finishes. We can match existing hardware or supply new period-correct hardware for restoration projects.
